Hussain's Death and the rest of Us

I have to narrate an incident where i had gone with my wife to a gallery. We wanted to buy a Buddha painting. Some were nice and costly. The guy who was managing the gallery was quiet helpful. Like a true indian i asked him the costliest painting that was present in the place. As per all the paintings that were there, the bigger they were the costly they would be. So i was waiting for him to get us something huge. I lost it when he showed me a normal photo frame size painting, in fact it was not a painting, but a sketch that was done in an hurry. And it costed 4 lacs. The painting was by none other than M.F.Hussain. I was amazed and also sad. It was a normal painting. Not fair that he could scribble something and just because of the brand value of the paper  appreciated 4,00,000 times in just 2 mins.

The artist Hussain is no more. I do not know whether he was a good artist or a great artist or just an artist but for the sake of investment he was hyped. But one thing that i do know is the paintings that he made were crappy for me.(please bear with me before you start abusing me). i feel art is something that you can see with some imperfections attached to it. His was sort of a grotesque and weird imagery. I feel that even Hank my best friend  Palani's Dog has some sense of Art in him compared to some of hussains paintings.

I have seen some of his paintings online. Man!! are they odd. Did you guys have a look at the Mother India painting he had done. Im not into anti nudity stuff but he has literally screwed our Country in a Canvas. No wonder people must have got pissed. Ya now i know why he was hounded by all the saffron dudes, they got pissed because he drew them real bad and gave some beard baba a migraine.

So not sure as to what i wanted to conclude. But one thing is for sure he is a very good investment. If you can steal one.

  1. the only painting i have appreciated till date is the one found in every company langar. That of the profile of a sad lady, with a little home in the background, greenery and hills in the foreground and overlooking a railway track with an indian railways train on it and most importantly the words "tum ghar kab aaoge" on it.This picture speaks a thousand and four words.
